Presentation of Berghof’s Policy Report in Brussels
The Berghof Foundation presented on 10 February 2012 its newest Policy Report “From Combatants to State-builders – Armed Groups in Participatory Peace Processes” to a group of high profile civil servants and experts of the European Union and other international organisations in Brussels. The meeting was co-hosted by the Berghof Foundation and the European Peace Liaison Office (EPLO) as part of the Civil Society Dialogue Network (CSDN) Policy Meeting series. The Policy Report compiles political recommendations from a 2-year collaborative research on this topic which was funded by the International Development Research Center. The findings from that research have recently been published by Routledge. The meeting served the purpose to make policy-makers familiar with our project findings and to stir a debate about how international actors, states and organisations should use the constructive potential of non-state actors in transitions from war to peace. In the first session, Berghof staff members Véronique Dudouet presented the main findings and recommendations of our Policy Report (link). The report was highly appreciated and its findings were discussed in depth in a following round-table discussion, moderated by our Executive Director Hans J. Giessmann. Among the participants of the meeting were two project participants, Aguswandi from Aceh and Florian Qehaja from Kosova, as well as Luxshi Vimalarajah from our Peace Support Department.
