Jordan: MoU on Civic and Nonviolent Education

10.07.2014

The Berghof Foundation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Jordan to intensify cooperation in the field of civic and nonviolent education.

Our aim is to foster nonviolent conflict transformation with qualification courses for students and lecturers and curriculum development.

A number of students and lecturers at the university took part in the qualification course for trainers in civic and nonviolent education, organised by the Berghof Foundation in Amman at the end of June. In a second phase, the 20 qualified trainers will set out to apply the contents and methods learned in their own schools and universities and in nonformal education.

This implementation phase was launched on 30 June with a conference on nonviolence in schools, organised by trainers and students at the Theodor Schneller School. Over 70 pupils expressed their ideas of nonviolent coexistence at school using storytelling and interactive theatre. The current Minister for Social Development, Reem Mamdouh Abu Hassan, was deeply impressed and promised her support.

A third part of the course, set to take place in Germany in October, will give participants a chance to expand their skills and evaluate their experiences. All activities are part of the project “Civic and nonviolent education in Jordan”, implemented by the Berghof Foundation with support of the ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) with means of the German Federal Foreign Office.
