Middle East & North Africa (MENA)
Dr. Heidi Huuhtanen leads a Syria project and is a Senior Advisor at the Berghof Foundation. She is also a lecturer on peace mediation and Middle East Affairs. Her background is in conflict resolution and Middle East policy. She formerly acted as a Programme Director, Head of Middle East and North Africa and Acting Head of Sub-Saharan Africa at the Crisis Management Initiative, CMI in Finland. She has also worked as an advisor at Martti Ahtisaari Rapid Reaction Facility, supporting President and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Martti Ahtisaari. In addition to Syria, she has also worked for example on Palestine, Yemen, South Sudan, Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan. On the side of policy analysis, she has directed a Middle East project at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, where her research focused on Arab state structures. She has also experience from the MFA of Finland and the Finnish Parliament. She has a PhD on Middle East International Relations from the University of Durham, UK.
