Critical substantive issues at the nexus of peacemaking and constitution-building

Mediation and constitutional processes are tasked with transforming the root causes of protracted societal conflicts, as well as redressing abuses of power and human suffering caused by conflict. This paper examines the most critical substantive or thematic issues which lie at the heart of both peacemaking and constitution-building endeavours: inclusive political governance; territory and power; security sector reform and governance; and transitional justice. The report then concludes by proposing a number of approaches and strategies to address some of these challenges, based on lessons learnt from past experiences and expert interviews.

Refugees as agents for peace: Reflecting on the implementation of peace education formats in...

This publication aims at outlining and reflecting on the principles that guided the implementation of project activities based on the information and data generated through monitoring and evaluation. It focuses primarily on the format of the qualification courses on “Building Peace from the Inside Out.” The first section begins with some basic information on Syrian refugees in Jordan. It continues outlining the Berghof Foundation’s take on peace education in the refugee camp settings. A short summary of the three peace education formats developed by Berghof Foundation’s Peace Education & Global Learning programme in close cooperation with its local team members and partner, Relief International Jordan’s Education programme follows. The paper then closes with a reflection on ten guiding principles for developing and implementing peace education formats in refugee camps. Derived from the more than three years work experience in the Jordanian context, those notions might be valuable in other contexts too.

This booklet seeks to amplify some of the hidden and forgotten voices in conflict. These stories of female ex-combatants from diverse political, religious, ethnic and national backgrounds show that women and their experiences of armed conflict have to be taken seriously for building sustainable peace. These are their stories as they tell them to each other. Six ex-combatant women collected the stories, reflecting as they did so on their reasons for joining the movements, their time as women in war, and how their lives unfolded once peace was restored. Theirs are stories of friendship and camaraderie, of life and death, of perseverance and resistance, and of rebuilding lives after war and continuing the struggle in peaceful ways.
