Berghof Foundation hosts former Vice President of Afghanistan

We had the pleasure of welcoming H.E. Mohammad Karim Khalili, former Vice President of Afghanistan and Deputy Head of the Afghan High Peace Council, for a bilateral meeting and a discussion event at Berghof Foundation in Berlin on 1 March 2017. During the event, H.E. Mohammad Karim Khalili shared his views regarding the current political situation in Afghanistan. He focused on progress and challenges in the Afghan peace process as well as the Afghan government’s assessment of the outlook for a political settlement of the Afghan conflict.

While expressing optimism regarding the overall prospect of the country, the former Vice President underlined his strong belief that a successful peace process must be Afghan-owned. In his view, the foundation of such a process already exists in the form of strong public consensus amongst the Afghan population. The role of regional and international partners, while necessary and appreciated, should first and foremost focus on creating a joint coordinated approach towards supporting the peace process. Such support needs to concentrate on assisting parties to the conflict in establishing an atmosphere and space conducive to constructive engagement towards a political compromise. H.E Khalili expressed his sincere gratitude for the German government’s on-going active support to the Afghan peace process. He re-affirmed his commitment to close cooperation with the Berghof Foundation in its efforts to support an inclusive Afghan-led conflict transformation process.
