With a wealth of experience at the intersection of politics and management – in areas as diverse as investment management, personnel development, good corporate governance, risk and crisis management – comes our new member of the Board of Trustees, State Secretary in non-active service, Dr. Christian Sundermann. We extend him a very warm welcome.
Strategic development has been at the centre of Dr. Sundermann’s career. He hails from Berlin originally, and has been involved in various decision and implementation processes at all levels of local, state and federal government in the past 20 years. For example, he served as State Secretary in Berlin’s Senate Department for Finance from August 2009 until 31 January 2012; and as State Secretary in the Ministry for Finance of Sachsen-Anhalt State in Germany from 2006 until 2009. Since 2014, he has been honorary executive director for the commission "quality seal for excellent trust fund Management" at the Federal Association of German Foundations (Bundesverband Deutscher Stiftungen). By and by, there has been an early overlap of interests between Dr. Sundermann and the (then) Berghof Foundation’s Institute for Conflict Research in Berlin: in the late 1980s, he wrote his doctoral thesis on an issue which was also at the centre of Berghof’s focus at the time: arms control ("Strategic Arms Control and Verification – Domestic and Foreign Policy Determinants of US American Verification Policy (1988 – 1990)").
