Dr. Martina Fischer
Programme Director, Southeast Europe

Martina Fischer is the Programme Director for Southeast Europe and a co-editor of the Berghof Handbook for Conflict Transformation. She joined the Berghof Foundation in 1998 and has worked as a senior researcher, as deputy and as acting director of the Berghof Research Center for Constructive Conflict Management. As a peace researcher, she has published extensively on peacebuilding in post-war societies and conducted research on the role of civil society in conflict transformation and on civil-military relations. Her current focus is on processes of dealing with the past and reconciliation in post-war societies.
Martina Fischer is experienced in policy advice both for state institutions and civil society actors. From 2011 until October 2017 she was on the board of the German Protestant Kirchentag and continues to provide advice on peace related issues to this platform. In December 2016 she was elected on the council for the International Peace Research Association (IPRA) as one of the representatives of the European Peace Research Association. She is a member of the scientific council for the German Foundation for Peace Research (DSF), and of the advisory board for academic journals (Die Friedens-Warte, Zeitschrift für Friedens- und Konfliktforschung, Wissenschaft und Frieden).
Dr. Fischer has published and (co-)edited 12 books and over 250 articles. She holds a PhD from the Department of Political Science at the Free University in Berlin.
