Working together for peace: International Day of Peace 2020

On 21 September International Day of Peace is celebrated all over the world. The UN General Assembly declared this holiday to strengthen “the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire”.

Data from the the Global Peace Index 2020 shows that the level of peacefulness around the world deteriorated for the ninth time in the past 12 years. The rise of populist leaders and messaging in political debates in many countries, the crisis of multilateralism and the deterioration of global norms, and the global COVID-19 pandemic are all threatening societies around the world.

Against this backdrop, over the past months it has become more clear than ever that only if we come together and join forces will we be able to move away from violence and create sustained peace.

With the official slogan “Shaping Peace Together”, this day is a great opportunity to honour and celebrate partnerships in peacebuilding. That’s why we asked our colleagues and partners in Berlin, Beirut and around the world: Why is it important to work together for peace?
